The former couple began dating in 2010 and split in 2013, but their characters, Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore, remained together on the program. Holt, who appeared in the Vampire Diaries spin-off series The Originals, said the exes never grew uncomfortable or allowed their connection go off. She added that they still love each other very much.
Elena's sister Caroline (now a vampire herself) finds out about her relationship with Damon and is furious with him for leaving Elena alone when he went to New Orleans for several episodes of the series. She tries to kill him multiple times but fails every time until the final episode when she succeeds after which she disappears from town. It is later revealed that she had turned her brother Jason into a vampire too.
Meanwhile, in present day 2014, Damon walks into an abandoned building where a girl is sitting in front of it. When she sees him, she runs away but stops at the sound of his voice. He follows her and finds out that she lives in the building across the street from him. His girlfriend Claire has just died in this building years ago. After remembering everything that has happened, he leaves town immediately after telling Elena that she is now free to move on with her life.
Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder were a match made in vampire heaven when they first started dating in 2014. Nikki played Rosalie Hale in the Twilight film trilogy, while Ian played Damon Salvatore in the CW drama The Vampire Diaries for eight seasons. They broke up in 2017 but still have many scenes together in The Vampire Diaries afterlife dimension called "The Other Side".
In addition to her work on The Vampire Diaries, Nikki has also appeared in other TV shows such as 90210, Gossip Girl, Jesse Stone: Last Man Standing and Copper. She also had small roles in films including 50/50, Tomorrow Never Dies, Iron Man 3, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
After finishing filming on The Vampire Diaries in 2017, Ian announced that he was leaving the show after eight seasons. He later revealed that he would like to continue working with director David Slade on other projects outside of The Vampire Diaries.

After meeting brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore, she became involved in a love triangle with them, which played out throughout the series. Dobrev departed the program after season six, but returned for the 2017 season finale.
She is currently married to Stefan and has two children with him: Jeremy and Katherine. She also has a daughter named Anna who died when she was only eight years old. Before she met Stefan, she lived with her parents and had a normal life. However, after being turned into a vampire, she realized that she can't go back to this way of living and decided to change herself completely so she could find peace.
Now that she's married to Stefan, she tries to live a normal life with him and their children. But sometimes she still misses sleeping during the day and eating food without drinking blood. Also, she still has feelings for Damon even though he hates her now because she saved his life once when they were kids.
In season six, it is revealed that Elena is pregnant with Damon's child.
Dobrev announced her departure from the show in May 2016. The actress wrote on her Instagram page at the time that she wanted to "focus on other projects for a while", but later confirmed that she would return for the final season of the show.
On January 13, 2013, The CW announced that Holt has joined the cast of The Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals for a backdoor pilot, reprising her role as Rebekah Mikaelson. She left the program as a series regular in the sixteenth episode of the first season, which aired on March 11, 2014 in the United States. The CW decided not to order more episodes of The Originals, so Holt's character was written out of the show.
Holt appeared in two episodes of The Vampire Diaries as a recurring character before being promoted to series regular. She is also expected to appear in future seasons of The CW drama series Reign.
Reign is based on the novels by Gracie Allen and tells the story of Mary, Queen of Scots, who after being convicted of treason is sentenced to death. However, she escapes through a window at the last minute and finds herself in France where she starts a new life under an alias. There, she meets the French king who wants to marry her to stop England from invading. He becomes her husband until he dies. After this event, she returns home to Scotland where she finds her brother waiting for her. He had been secretly protecting her during her absence.
Holt began appearing in commercials for the 2014 film The Lego Movie with other The Vampire Diaries stars including Steven R. McQueen, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder.
Caroline is the final vampire standing at the end of The Vampire Diaries, when Damon and Elena revert to human form and Stefan and Enzo perish. By the end of the series, Caroline and Elena Gilbert have married the Salvatore brothers and have become family. Elena is married to Damon, while Caroline is married to Stefan. In addition, it is revealed that Caroline is pregnant with a daughter who will be raised by Elena and Damon.
When The Vampire Diaries ended, Caroline was living in New Orleans with her husband and working as an architect. She and her husband later had a son named Thomas who was born in April 2014.
During the show's first season, it is revealed that Caroline is a vampire. She hides this fact from everyone except for her brother Zachary, who turns out to be a hybrid vampire hunter known as a "vampire slayer". In addition, it is revealed that she is addicted to sunlight; if exposed to it for too long, she will die. She tries to limit this exposure by staying inside during the day but ends up turning to drinking blood to survive. Eventually, she manages to break her addiction and move on with her life.
In season two, it is revealed that Caroline has been keeping track of her siblings. When she discovers that there are only five remaining vampires, she goes looking for them.
