Lynne Austin, Hooters Calendar, 1985 The inaugural Hooters Calendar (1986 edition) was released in 1985, featuring the soon-to-be-famous feature girl, Lynne Austin. She had become a national icon before she even put on a uniform at the new restaurant opening in South Daytona, Florida.
The original concept was created by Tom Benson, who had also founded Waffle House, a popular chain of Southern-style breakfasts located across the country. Benson wanted to create a similar experience for men with an emphasis on breasts, so he named the company after the mythical creatures that are said to be capable of flying over long distances with the help of their wings.
He initially tried to get model approval photos of women with bandages over their breasts for his business cards and advertising materials, but this wasn't enough for him so he decided to find a woman who would actually wear a bikini as part of her job. He eventually found Lynne Austin working at a different South Daytona restaurant where she wore a string bikini as she prepared food for customers. This got him thinking about how he could recreate that feeling for men when they eat out, thus creating what is now known as the Hooters brand.

A second Girl of the Year was also named but she remained on display at the National Museum of American History until July 28, 2009, when she was returned to Mattel. This second Girl of the Year was Barbie.
She became the first Girl of the Year in January 2000, after winning the top prize at the Kids' Choice Awards held on that date. Her victory was due to popular vote; she received more votes than any other candidate. She has since been replaced by another Barbie as part of a promotional campaign featuring different girls of various cultures and geographies.
Barbie's tenure as Girl of the Year was not without controversy. In August 1999, the non-profit group Women in Need filed a lawsuit alleging that Mattel had violated federal law by failing to include women in its decisionmaking process when it selected its own product as best selling toy line. The suit sought an injunction requiring Mattel to select a new Girl of the Year from among candidates who were not its own products.
In February 2000, Mattel agreed to change its selection process for the next award ceremony in order to resolve the lawsuit.
